Modernism / Postmodernism

MODERNISM

(wikipedia) Modernism is modern thought, character or practice.
Modernism is the ideallistic, lets clear out from world we live in, break away from things, old cultures.
Modernists say why do we try to live in a place we do not live in, i.e Gretian buildings.

Eileen Grey is a Modernism designer spoke about in class. She was an Irish Furniture designer and architect, born in 1878 and died in 1976. It wasn't until she died that her work was truly appreciated and she became a pioneer in the Modernism movement. Some examples of her furniture are below.
Postmodernism

After the Modernsim movement.

I am looking at Post Modernism buildings. The buildings spoke about in class definately have a look that in common with each other.

Glass is definately a major thing these buildings have in common and particularly the curvature of the glass. These buildings are made to stand out, many of these have been an extension of the original historic building once in that spot or have replace them completely. These buildings have a very defiant structure to them
This is the new extension put on the side of the historic National Gallery in London, it looks completely out of place, but then recreating the building may not be successful, at least this shows that the extension is new.

This is the new entrance to Southend Pier after burning down twice in my lifetime and god knows how many more before 1986 the pier entrance has been modernised, it does make the golden mile of the seafront look more with the times and especially as the planks on the pier have all recently been replaced and so have the trains you would never know how many years our dear old pier has been sitting there festering.

Another example of modernised building work on a historic building although I think Charing Cross Station works particularly well.

This is the AA building in Bedford Square. This is completely different to the other glass buiildings on this page however in terms of structure is very much the same.

My final building is the City Hall in Seattle. This is very similar to the Charing Cross and National Gallery extensions.
